STRANGE &
MYSTERIOUS
![]() ALL RELIGION HAS GODS AND
DEMONS
The Bible is packed full of references to strange
and terrible gods and demons worshiped by the
peoples of the Near East,
the ancient Babylonians,
Assyrians and Sumerians. Isaiah 34:14 mentions
Lilith, the "night hag "
a hideous female demon
known for terrorizing
people at night, pressing
heavily against their chests.
To the people of the
Near East, demons were a
continual threat that had to be warded off.
It is said these diabolical
entities lurked in deserts and
near graves. They were said to have posed a persistent threat to women in childbirth. Ready to murder the newborn and his or her mother. These included Lilitu,
or Lilith, and Lamashtu.
![]() Pazuzu was said to
be a demon who blew in
from the sandstorms of the desert.
He had a monstrous head,
hands and feet
ending in eagle talons
a thunderbolt ending
in one hand, a curled
tail and four wings.
Many statues and amulets
were made to ward off
Pazuzu and the desert wind he rode in on. One particular incantation
began
"I am the god Pazuzu,
son of the God Hanbi,
king of the evil -wind
demons."
This was to acknowledge
the power of the demon.
It ended, "The winds,
their wings are broken"
Similar rituals are
said to have been employed
against Namtar, the
plague demon.
Some of the strange
and mysteriously powerful Gods.
Included Ea the god of water and wisdom, Enil the lord of wind
and
Anu, the distant god
of the heavens.
Astral deities of the sun, moon, and the planet Venus were of particular importance,
as were national gods
like Maeduk of Babylon,
or Asshur of Assyria.
Superstition played an
important part in the
pagan religions.
Images of the deities
were often consecrated
to give the gods life,
to open their eyes
to see the world.
